Biographical information:

Born in 1864 or 1865 in Plisa. Liba (Liebe, Libe) was his step-sister. Married approximately 1883. Immigrated July 5, 1911 with recorded age 43, and place of birth as Plisze. Liba immigrated with "Feiga" and "Efroim" December 26, 1911. Bayla's immigration record appears to be under the name Beile Serlin.

We have David's internal Russian passport, valid for travel within the Russian Empire, with his name written in Cyrillic (not, however, by him). He emigrated shortly before it expired.

From this document we learn that Yossel (which corresponds to "Joseph") was a trader or merchant living in Plisa, outside of Disna, in the eastern Vilna guberniya, one of the departments of the Pale of Settlement in the Russian Empire. He was "illiterate" (which may also mean that he wrote Yiddish but not Russian).
