July 5, 1941. For the defense of the coastal flank of the Southern front, and to cover the region of Odessa from the west, the Coastal group was created out of the army of the Southern front. ... Operationally it was subordinate to the Odessa military seabase and the Dunai military fleet. On July 15 the group was reorganized into the coastal army (coast guard?).
