This site was set up in 1996 to display information about the Vilna Cherlin line (descendants of Elye Velvel) and his wife's Seplowitz family, collected by Estelle Cherlin, 30 Alderwood Dr., West Hartford, CT 06117. This included recollections of Mary Jean Cherlin and supplementary information collected by David Cherlin on a "Cherlin jaunt" across the country.
Additional information on other lines arrived either by email or by searchin onine databases as they became available. See What's New for some highlights (no longer updated).
First version November 1996 on the ISP NJCC: the Vilna line only.
Moved to the ISP Voicenet in Winter 2000, then Earthlink (Fall 2002), in expanded form. Chervin lines added in 2004. The domains cherlin.org and chervin.org were acquired via gandi.com, later transferred to nearlyfreespeech.com.
THe Earthlink files made use of 80MB of storage associated with 6 email accounts by 2012.
This awkard set up was replaced gradually by a single site at cherlvin.nfshost.com, beginning in 2014. In 2018 the main pages were converted to shtml format. There is no database, unfortunately. That conversion would be desirable, but laborious.
