Biographical information:

Vladimir Cherlin is a herpetologist (a biologist specializing in snakes). His Ph.D. is in molecular biology. He lives in Russia, but his son has emigrated to Israel.

He married in 1971.

His son Alexander was contacted by Estelle at the Weizman Institute by electronic mail in 1997.

Vladimir wrote to us in March 1998. He was born in Leningrad on March 6, 1951 and studied biology at the Leningrad State University, then worked in the Zoological Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the U.S.S.R. He holds a doctorate in biology and as we learned earlier from the Web, he is a zoologist dealing with the biology of reptiles and with evolutionary problems.

In 1983-89 Vladimir lived in Middle Asia in Tashkent, Uzbekhistan and worked in their Zoological Park and the Physiological Institute. After that he returned to Leningrad and worked in the Institute of Evolutionary Physiology. Then he became the director of a small bioscience company that carried out some ecological investigations and produced snake venom. This closed when the company lost its financial support (from the state?).

He was without work from 1995 to 1998. In 1995 he joined the Orthodox Christian Church and has been working in one of the churches since 1998.

"Unfortunately I know very little about my family tree. In the Soviet Union this interest was `undesirable'."

However he did supply information on the previous two generations, found in the pages linked to this. In addition he mentions the presence of other Cherlins in St. Petersburg, but they are not in contact and are not aware of a relationship.

In addition Vladimir supplied us with the name of a genealogical research firm active in Russia, run by his friends. This is:

" That is all that I know. I would be very glad to be in contact with you and with other relatives. But my computer and modem are very old and display ony black and white, so I cannot receive pictures. "

2003 update. Vladimir met Estelle Widlus Blum (of the Lutsk Cherlin line) in St. Petersburg and it came out that these two lines are the same - their grandfathers were brothers (Leib and Ilya).
