I married my wife Beverley Ward in 1954 and had been going out with her since 1952. When we became engaged, my sister and I sold our old family home and I moved in to Bev's parents' house. As a result, I became involved with her family (the Ward family was spread all over Tasmania and some in Australia). Once she came to Australia in 1919 she did not seem to keep in contact with the London members. However, Chester (Beryl's husband) had a very good job in Sydney and paid for Beryl's brothers (Ben the eldest and Jacob (known as Jack) to migrate to Australia.

I did quite a lot of research over a long period and was able to piece together details of the London family from Census information.

The 1901 census showed the whole family (Abraham born 1868, Mary born 1871, 3 sons, 3 daughters and a grandparent Sirry born in 1841).

The next census in 1911, did not list Abraham or Miriam (Mary) and further research revealed that Abraham had died in 1906 and Mary (Miriam) in 1901.

It must have been in this period that Uncle William offered to take Beryl to USA to continue her education but Beryl would not leave the family as the grandmother could not manage.

During the 1st World War, brother Harry was conscripted into the army. Whilst on leave he said he was not going back. Beryl said that he would be caught and executed so he returned to France. He was killed on 3rd. May 1917 along with thousands of others and the French established a memorial at Arras - one of our nieces visited the memorial a few years ago.

I have quite a few certificates and the marriage certificate of Abraham Cherlin and Mire Uffland shows that the marriage was solemnized at the East London Synagogue on 1/2/1891. This synagogue no longer exists and I discovered that the records are held at Southampton University.
