My Mum said nothing at all about our Jewish ancestry till I was about 12 and our family lived in Wagga Wagga and even then she said to tell no-one about it. My Mum said her father used to say to people my Nanna (Beryl Ward) was French. My Mum said they had a French housemaid in the house when she was young. She said her and her sisters were sent comic books from relatives called Ufland who lived in New York - I think my Nanna's Beryl's Uncle and Aunt and cousins. My Mum used to say that letters from New York stopped in the 1930's and there was a story that her great Aunt and Uncle Ufland went to Germany via Morocco. The Ward family got a letter from Morocco and that is the last that was heard of them. My Dad reckoned he found some evidence that the Uflands did get back to USA though we grew up with the story they disappeared overseas. My Mum used to say she thought she may be related to the film producer Harry Ufland.
