There is an Ellis Island manifest showing the arrival of an Ize Scherlin accompanied by an Abram Stoler on February 5, 1904, aged 19; so born, at the earliest, in 1884. In spite of the discrepancy, these may well be the same person. Ize was a painter, with last residence as Vitebsk, which is a guberniya adjacent to the Vilna guberniya, but lying to the northeast. He was going to join his uncle Salamon Reich.
