Optical engineer dealing with diffraction gratings, graduated from the Leningrad technological institute in 1930, with a Ph. D. in 1933. In 1937-1950 he served as the director of the Vavilov State Optical Institute (GOI).
Winner of the Lenin prize, 1958 (posthumous).
