We first heard from Malcolm on July 23, 1998. He wrote: I am in Australia, never seen another Cherlin!!! thought I was the last one!!! I put my name into the box and pressed the button, couldn't believe my eyes!!! That was two days ago ...
Our information on the Cherlin line in Australia all comes from Malcolm.
Malcolm was born in 1955 and lives in Sydney. Telephone 61-2-96344 889.
Malcolm has been putting together some motorcycle races, including a rally for the benefit of the spinal injuries unit in Sydney.
We mentioned that the American Cherlins run more to trombones than to motorcycles, which elicited this information:
My Dad, Len Cherlin, was an excellent amateur piano and electric organ player; my Mum, Valma, was a professional violin player, and whilst at school I sang in the choir and some opera, as well as piano and guitar. My wife Catherine is a ballerina and plays piano and violin, writes musicals, and sings, as does my daughter Sarah (14). Little Elsa (7) seems to like the electric organ and guitar!
It turns out our Malcolm is best known as "Auntie Mal", team manager of the ebullient Ducati Bears. Here's a sample of the newsletter:
The "grand old man" of Australian Bears racing John Lyons, #88, Ducat 998S, clinched his second National Bears F1 title on Sunday. Lyons rode only 16 of the 20 races held during the year, and still won the championship. I had the accident in South Australia dogging me all year, he said; we've had to fight tooth and nail to make up for that weekend ....
... There was a dry line and we sacrificed the wets, and focused on the last race. Our opponents used a spare bike shod with slicks, after frantically swapping bikes with moments to spare. Said Aunty Mal, Team Manager: It was high drama.
And they do all this riding upside down!
